GENEALOGY
Please note that we do not hold historical records at the church.
Such records are held by the North Devon Records Office at Barnstaple, which is a branch of the County Records Office at Exeter. They have a list of Parish Registers that they hold. You may at times find that the Record Office lists South Molton as Molton, South. It may also help you to know that our churchyard was officially closed for burials as of 1st January 1858*, and any burials thereafter would have been in the town cemetery. Enquiries in respect of such can be made with South Molton Town Council The churchyard plots were all grassed over, and the area is now a 'green' space, maintained by the Town Council. What gravestones survive have either been placed in the retaining walls around the grassed areas, or laid flat in the north-west corner of the churchyard. These no longer mark the original burial plots. You may find it useful to go to the FIND A GRAVE website at https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2553017/st-mary-magdalene-churchyard South Molton has a small, but excellent, local museum, which you may find a useful source of information. In any event it is well worth a visit. The hours of opening, and contact details can be found on their website at www.southmoltonmuseum.org You will also find the Devon Family History Society website a valuable resource in your research. It can be found at www.devonfhs.org.uk We hope this information is of some help, and wish you success in your research. * The London Gazette 28th October 1856 & 29th September 1857 |
